Building your Character... but Professionally

ree

When you are searching for jobs, it can be difficult to know where to begin. What are you supposed to do to find those job openings? Here are a few avenues to keep in mind:

Brainstorm a list of your favorite companies:

If you are unsure of where to search for game jobs, it is a good idea to brainstorm a list of your favorite studios and games. Then, you can check their company websites and Twitter to see if they are hiring. Some of the openings you find at your favorite companies might be competitive, but it’s still worth throwing your hat in the ring! Nintendo, Naughty Dog, Square Enix... "let'sa go!"

Check job boards:

GameJobs.coGrackle HQ, Gamasutra, and Hitmarker are game development-specific job boards that update frequently! Each site has a pretty extensive compilation of industry jobs that span multiple disciplines as well as numerous levels of employment.

Indeed, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn are other more general job boards that are worth checking out as well.

Get active on Twitter:

Tweet about the games you are making and interact with other devs on Twitter. This is a great way to build ties with other members of the community. You never know who you might run into. You could end up meeting someone who will be a collaborator on a future project, or a mentor, or a job connection. It can be scary to post about your work, and it takes time to build a following. But, Social media is a great tool to help you as a game developer.

In particular, many Indie game developers are very active on Twitter. If you are looking to get involved in the Indie scene, Twitter could be your inside track. Quick tip: be careful not to be too pushy when you are interacting with other developers (or anyone for that matter).

At the end of the day, you need to send out a lot of applications. Even with a strong application, the job hunt is a number's game. It takes time and a little bit of luck. The more applications you put out, the better your chances are of finding a job. So, get searching and happy hunting!
